As Jalila kicks off her own home renovations, we thought this would be the perfect time to share some of our favourite tips for giving your space a fresh new look without blowing your budget.
Whether you're renovating to love your space more or to increase your home’s value before selling, smart, cost-conscious updates can make a big impact.
Here are our top renovation do’s and don't to help you stay on track:
DO: Know When to DIY and When to Call the Pros
There’s nothing more satisfying than a successful do-it-yourself project but not everything should be tackled solo. If your project involves mold, asbestos, electrical, or plumbing work, it’s best to bring in a licensed professional.
However, painting, changing hardware, or installing a back splash? Go for it, just be sure you’ve got the right tools, time, and patience.
Wafa & Jalila’s Tip: Always overestimate your DIY budget slightly to account for the “oops” moments because they will happen!
DON’T: Overlook What You Already Have
Sometimes a fresh perspective is all you need. Rearranging furniture, swapping decor between rooms, or reframing art can transform your space at no cost. Even small changes like updating pillow covers or adding houseplants can spark big results.
Try This: Add large mats around photos or art for a more dramatic, gallery-style look.
DO: Repurpose Before You Replace
Before you toss old furniture or fixtures, ask yourself: can it be repainted, re-stained, or reimagined? A fresh coat of paint on cabinets or updated hardware can breathe new life into an old piece saving money and reducing waste.
Quick Win: Changing handles and knobs on drawers or doors is a small touch that makes a big impression.
DON’T: Skip the Permits
Major renovations like knocking down walls or adding rooms often require city permits. Skipping this step can lead to serious (and costly) issues when it’s time to sell.
Plan Ahead: Check your local zoning rules early so you can set realistic timelines and avoid delays.
DO: Let Creativity Lead the Way
Your home should reflect you. From fun paint colors to peel-and-stick wallpaper, textured finishes, or curb appeal makeovers there are plenty of budget-friendly ways to let your personality shine through your space.
Outdoor Tip: Consider xeriscaping (low-water landscaping) for a beautiful, eco-friendly yard.
